Reconditioned Ford Transit Engine Buyer’s Guide

Buying a Reconditioned Ford Transit Engine: What to Check

Replacing a failed van engine is a significant decision. A low headline price does not necessarily mean the lowest total cost. Check what the engine includes, which parts are reused, whether VAT and delivery are extra, and who is responsible for installation.

Confirm the engine code and compatibility

Ford Transit engines vary by generation, capacity, emissions standard, drive configuration and engine code. Give the supplier your registration, VIN where requested, year and engine code. Confirm compatibility in writing before ordering.

Ask what was actually rebuilt

A reconditioned engine should be described by its specific work and replacement parts, not just a general label. At Transit Tech, our stated specification includes block crack testing, cylinder-head pressure testing, crankshaft polishing or regrinding where required, new pistons and rings, bearings, seals, head gasket, oil pump and timing components as applicable. Confirm the specification for the particular unit on your quotation.

Understand the total price

Ask for an itemised breakdown of engine price, VAT, delivery, fitting labour, consumables and any refundable or non-refundable exchange charges. Transit Tech’s advertised engine prices exclude VAT and assume a usable exchange engine. Without a usable exchange unit, a £250 + VAT surcharge applies (£300 including VAT at 20%).

Check the warranty before buying

Read the written warranty and fitting conditions before ordering. Ask what is covered, what evidence of installation is needed, and the process for reporting a fault. Transit Tech reconditioned engines have a six-month unlimited-mileage warranty, subject to written terms.

Think about the original cause of failure

A replacement engine can be damaged if the fault that caused the original failure remains. Ask your fitter to inspect relevant cooling, lubrication, fuel and ancillary systems and follow the applicable installation instructions.

Supply only or supply and fit?

Supply only may suit customers with a trusted mechanic. Supply and fit offers a single quotation for the replacement and installation, subject to the confirmed scope. Request written details before agreeing to either option.
